Compound Foods is leveraging food science, fermentation, and synthetic biology to recreate coffee without coffee beans.
Founder and CEO, Maricel Saenz, is a native of Costa Rica and has grown up witnessing how climate change has impacted coffee farmers at home. Coffee is now the fifth-most polluting crop in the world, and as a devout coffee drinker herself, Maricel wanted to find a solution. Her dream was to create a coffee that tasted like home without the negative effects on the environment. She founded Compound Foods in San Francisco in 2020.
